Turtles are awesome (but so are tortoises). Here’s a box turtle.

Red-eared slider is the best turtle. Fact.

I saw a bunch of turtles and tortoises at last week’s reptile show.

You got any more pictures of that reptile show?

Sure, but not many. My son was looking for a bearded dragon but now wants a uromastyx. I don’t know a dang thing about them. Here are a few more shots from the show

Those guys will be huge when they grow up. The sulcata tortoises are the largest species that are kept as pets.

I decided against picking this particular one up and moving him.

Tortoises are fun pets. They aren’t very social but they aren’t bothered by lack of activity or boring living habitat in the same way than most common pets. Certain species like to have some company but some like to stay alone for most of the time.

I have a Russian tortoise that has been in the family since 1991. Here’s Kille enjoying some broccoli.

I thought a box turtle might be interesting since they are fairly common around my mom’s house. We saw several and rescued one from the road on our last trip. Internet search begins....

Turns out we probably saw three-toed box turtles. Now that I’ve looked them up, the wildlife department says it is legal to keep them as pets, but they are difficult to keep healthy in captivity.

Maybe my son will save up his money and get himself the lizard he wants.

Like most turtles box turtles probably need very moist habitat. The same applies to most other reptiles if they aren’t originated from desert like environments. Some kind of hibernation is also essential to some species.

Box turtles may not need too much moisture. Oklahoma can be pretty dry. If bet you are right about the hibernation. It freezes there every winter.

It would be fun to see turtles in their native habitat. I have seen only one swarm of turtles in a large lake in Greete during 90's. These were really shy fellows. Unless you knew that they lived there you couldn’t have realized what the weird things pointing from the water were. They dove away if you tried to approach them closer than 30 meters or so.

The closest place to Finland where you can see native turtles is in Poland.

We see a lot of water turtles here in Louisiana. Oklahoma is the only place I’ve seen wild land turtles. I accidentally killed one with a mower when I was cutting the tall grass on the back of my mom’s property. Tall grass isn’t just a euphemism, her property is half Postoak-Blackjack Forest and half Tallgrass Prairie. It looks a lot like this:

She likes to keep it somewhat natural, so it only gets cut a couple of times a year. The grass is often waist high before it’s cut.

After I hit a turtle, I learned to walk the property before mowing.

These things happen. When you grow up in the country, you learn that death is a part of life.
